Don’t Panic!

I know there have been some posts going around about Yahoo! and Tumblr and Yahoo’s really bad record when it comes to fannish spaces. It’s true; Yahoo is responsible for the deletion of a crap ton of spaces where fans gathered and pursued their fandoms–GeoCities most prominent among them. 

How and ever, Tumblr isn’t done for yet and for those of you who don’t know how to upload or back up your tumblrs, ArchiveTeam.org has some tools for you to use.

For those of you who are interested, ArchiveTeam.org managed to archive the vast, vast majority of GeoCities before Yahoo shut it down. They’ve got a lot of other projects on tap (livejournal is one of them) so if you have the know-how and the time, give them a hand.

Even though they’re likely to scrape Tumblr in the event of a shut-down, it really falls to us as Tumblr users to back up our own bits and pieces, then store them for later retrieval. Always back up your files. Always.

So take a deep breath, get a cup of whatever relaxes you, and be your own hero. Back up those sites!
